A New York Times journalist covering the Middle East has described the experience of his iPhone being hacked, and the security precautions he now takes as a result. Ben Hubbard says there were four attempts to hack his iPhone, and that two of them succeeded, with all the signs pointing to the use of NSO’s Pegasus spyware. The South China Morning Post reports that iPhone maker Foxconn has replaced more than half of its workforce with robots since the launch of the iPhone 6. The figures were provided by the local government in Kunshan, where the company is based. “The Foxconn factory has reduced its employee strength from 110,000 to 50,000, thanks to the introduction of robots. It has tasted success in reduction of labour costs,” said the department’s head Xu Yulian … Since September 2014, more than 500 companies in the Chinese province of Dongguan have spent a total of $630M on robot and AI technology to replace human workers....

We know that Apple has stockholder interests to protect and will likely take a cut of the cheddar on apps that it delivers. How picky Apple is about what type of apps get on the platform is another story entirely. We already know that, for whatever reason, Apple isn’t fond of putting iChat-type of Instant Messaging on the platform. Whether this is to encourage the lucative SMS services or to save AT&T some terrabytes on bandwidth is not really certain....

In the coming days, iPhoto for Mac will see an update that focuses on major bug fixes. The current version, 9.4, was released alongside OS X Mountain Lion. We’ve heard many reports from readers having issues syncing photos to their iOS devices via iTunes. Some users also reported random iPhoto for Mac crashes. Apple will fix both of these issues and more per the release notes of iPhoto 9.4.1: AppleCare reps are currently being trained on the changes....

Apple just released the 6th release of iOS 7 for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. The small 13.5MB update is available via Software Update and contains the usual bugfixes and improvements. The update comes a week after the previous update and just hours after a report pegged the Beta 6 update for next week. The focus of the small update appears to be on an emergency issue with iTunes in the Cloud which requires a workaround....

An iOS app rating flaw lets developers create apps that cannot be opened until the user gives it a five-star review. It’s the latest discovery by FlickType developer Kosta Eleftheriou, whose Twitter bio now describes him as “Professional AppStore critic.” Eleftheriou has indeed made a name for himself identifying high-profile scam apps that made it through app review, some of which have made millions of dollars for their developers …...

A security researcher has found that the iPhone 11 Pro still intermittently collects location data even when the user has blocked it from doing so. Apple has seemingly admitted this, telling the researcher that this is ‘expected behavior’ … KrebsOnSecurity identified the issue, made a video showing it happening (below) and reported it to Apple. However, the response from the iPhone maker implies that certain ‘system services’ continue to collect location data even when the user has selected Never for all individual system services and apps....

As we rounded up last week, the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro are expected to be announced next month with a handful of notable changes and features. Ahead of the announcement, analysts at the Taiwanese research firm TrendForce have published their expectations for this year’s flagship iPhone lineup, corroborating much of what was previously known. According to TrendForce, the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro models will expand support for mmWave 5G to additional countries outside of the US....

We’ve seen several iPhone 13 dummy models so far, and we’re today seeing photos of the latest ones from Chinese social media site Weibo. Morgan Stanley this morning raised its price target on Apple stock to $210, up $25 from the investor’s previous $185 target – and warned the impact could drive values even higher. “We believe the market generally expects a doubling of iPhone units with the lower price point ($199) and we believe this is realistic, if not conservative,” the investment bank said in a note....

CIRP says its data shows that early iPhone XS sales were strong, and were split evenly between the XS and XS Max. In the ten days that they were available in the quarter, CIRP finds that the new iPhone XS and XS Max models each accounted for 8% of US iPhone sales for the entire quarter … In fact, that combined 16% share achieved in the final 10 days of the quarter meant that iPhone XS sales rivalled that of the entire quarter’s sales of each of last year’s models....

Iron Man had the first X-Men Easter egg in the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe. It now looks as though it’s only a matter of time before the X-Men enter the Marvel Cinematic Universe; the Disney/Fox acquisition is awaiting approval from a handful of international regulators. Once that’s done, Disney CEO Bob Iger has already confirmed that the film rights to both the X-Men and the Fantastic Four will return to Marvel Studios....

Few rumors claim that the upcoming iPhone 8 will be having wireless charging functionality and will be made of “All Glass”. However, according to sources, it looks like Apple is working on an iPhone that can be bend from the middle. As reported by the site Patently Apple, Apple had managed to get the patent for the bendable mobile screen technology that they have been exploring since 2013. Patently Apple explains that this new patent shows “a perspective view of an illustrative electronic device such as a future iPhone that bends along a flexible portion such as a flexible seam associated with a hinge”....

Both iOS and Android loyalty are at the highest levels ever seen, according to the latest data from Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP) … The company measures loyalty by the number of people activating a smartphone with the same mobile OS as their previous device. It found that iOS loyalty was at 91%, while Android was slightly higher at 92%. Android has historically been higher – likely due to the wide choice of handsets available – but the trend seen across 2018 (below) suggests that iOS loyalty may well overtake that of Android at some point this year....
